Creating and Consuming Media with Purpose

The content we create and consume plays a significant role in shaping our perspectives, values, and, ultimately, our lives. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are guided by principles that influence every aspect of our lives, including our media habits. One such guiding principle is found in Article of Faith 13, which states, "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."

As Latter-day Saints, we can apply Article of Faith 13 to our media consumption and creation in several ways. Just as the article emphasizes seeking after virtuous and praiseworthy things, we should be intentional about the content we choose to consume. Before engaging with any media, we can ask ourselves if it aligns with honesty, truthfulness, and virtue principles. Whether it's movies, TV shows, books, or social media, choosing content that uplifts and edifies our spirits can positively impact our thoughts and attitudes.

As creators, whether we're writers, artists, filmmakers, or social media influencers, we can use our talents to share messages that inspire, uplift, and bring light into the world. Article of Faith 13 encourages us to do good to all men, and our creative works can spread goodness and positivity to others. We should strive to create content that reflects our values and contributes to building a better world. Article of Faith 13 reminds us to exercise discernment in our media consumption and be mindful of the messages and influences we allow into our lives. By aligning our media choices with our values as disciples of Christ, we can ensure that what we consume contributes to our spiritual growth rather than detracting from it.

Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we may encounter media content that is not in line with our beliefs or standards. In such cases, Article of Faith 13 encourages us to have the courage to set boundaries and make choices that are consistent with our values. This may involve limiting our exposure to certain types of content or actively seeking out alternatives that uplift and inspire us.

Article of Faith 13 guides Latter-day Saints in navigating the complex world of media consumption and creation. By seeking virtuous and praiseworthy content, creating meaningful works that reflect our values, exercising discernment and discipleship, and setting boundaries when necessary, we can ensure that our media habits align with our commitment to following the teachings of Jesus Christ. As we apply these principles in our lives, we can find greater peace, joy, and fulfillment in our media experiences.
